Khan guarded Himalayan monasteries, lion-maned and utterly unimpressed, and he has not lowered his standards since. He decides who enters — the house, the yard, his personal space — and he has never once explained his criteria. The monks said he could smell intention. The tourists said he could smell fear. Both were correct.
