“Poi eats slowly, like every meal is a ceremony, and the whole pack waits now — even Pepito. Nobody can explain the rule. The rule explains itself.”
Respect is the oldest trick.

“Extinct, but never unloved.”
A Tide dog of The Lost
3 known connections · an open question
Poi grew up in old Hawaii on taro and sunshine, so loved that his very bones reshaped themselves around the life he was given. When the Hawaiians buried their dogs, they buried them with honors — because a dog who shares your food shares your family. The breed is gone. The honoring never stopped.
He still eats slowly, savoring every bite like it's a ceremony, and the pack has started waiting for him to finish before anyone leaves the table. Even Pepito waits. Nobody can explain why, least of all Pepito.
One evening he'll teach the others the old way of lying in a sun-warmed circle, shoulder to shoulder, no quarrels. They'll fall asleep like that. Someone will hum. Nobody will know the tune.

The St. John’s water dog, the Talbot, the Hawaiian poi dog — real dogs, really gone. The pack keeps their bowls full anyway. Extinction, here, is just a longer walk.
