Rags ran the traplines of the far north with the Hare people, swift and clever, pulling sleds over ice that sang under the runners. The old fur traders wrote that the Hare Indian dogs were oddly fond of music — Rags still tilts his head at a fiddle. The husky took the sleds. Rags kept the songs.
He races Blizzard across the frozen lake at dawn and loses gracefully, which Blizzard finds deeply suspicious. In the evenings he sits near anyone humming and harmonizes — a soft, eerie, northern sound. The pack has started humming just to hear him join in.
When the first real blizzard of the year hits, Rags will lead a sled team of volunteers out to check the far fence line — not because he's needed, but because the ice is calling and he finally gets to answer. Blizzard will insist on coming. Rags will let him.

Grace is a kind of speed.
“A fiddle was heard from the far fence line at midnight — one low tune, played once, then gone. Willow insists the coyotes left because of her patrol. The humming, she insists, is unrelated.”
Follow the music, not the patrol.
The St. John’s water dog, the Talbot, the Hawaiian poi dog — real dogs, really gone. The pack keeps their bowls full anyway. Extinction, here, is just a longer walk.
