The living story
The story so far
Yandi's youngest daughter, the little princess Nüwa — no relation to the creator goddess, though the names match and the confusion is three thousand years old — drowned in the Eastern Sea and rose again as a small bright bird. Ever since she has carried pebbles and twigs in her beak to fill the sea that killed her. The sea laughs. She does not hear it. Three thousand years, one beak, zero doubt.
Happening now
She is flying the shoreline right now, a pebble in her beak, dropping it into the surf with enormous precision. The sea takes it. She goes back for another.
What may come
One day the sea will be full — the last pebble, the last twig, three thousand years of beakfuls finally adding up — and Jingwei will land on the filled shore, fold her wings, and rest. The sea will be land. The land will remember being the sea. She will have won.
