The Weaver Girl, granddaughter of the Jade Emperor: she weaves the clouds into brocade by day and loves a cowherd by night — heaven's least approved romance. She crosses the Magpie Bridge over the Milky Way exactly once a year, on the seventh night of the seventh month. The magpies consider it the honor of their lives. She considers it not nearly enough.
She is at the loom right now, weaving a bolt of cloud-brocade with one eye on the sky-river. The seventh month is coming. The magpies are already practicing formation.
One year the bridge will hold past dawn — the magpies have been training for it in secret, wing by wing — and the seventh night will become the eighth, and then the ninth, and heaven will have to rewrite the calendar. The Jade Emperor's hairpin made the river. The magpies are unmaking it, one wingbeat at a time.
“Zhinü weaves the clouds into brocade, and every bolt has its pattern — storm, dawn, river-light. Last seventh month she finished a bolt with no pattern at all: plain dark silk, uncut, unhemmed, folded and put away. Asked what it was for, she said it was for no one. The magpies, who see everything, refuse to discuss it.”
