After eighty-one tribulations and one very long walk west, the Buddha laid a hand on the Monkey King's head and gave him the title he had been fighting toward since the stone cracked open: Douzhansheng Fo, Victorious in Strife. Same grin. Same staff. The mischief is still there — it just has somewhere to go now.
He is sitting in the lotus position right now — badly, one knee up, staff across his lap — while the younger bodhisattvas try not to stare. The grin has not changed. The grin will never change.
When the last battle worth fighting is finally won, the title will settle over him like a robe that finally fits — and the Fighting Buddha will lay down the staff for good, and the stone he came from will still be there. It was always going to be there. That was the whole journey.
“He broke into the underworld and crossed his name out of the ledgers himself — the most famous vandalism in heaven. The clerks check it every century: still crossed out, still his. Last check, the ink was wet. The brushstroke — the clerks swear — was fresh. Wukong laughed when told. The Fighting Buddha did not laugh. He looked at the ledger for a long time.”
