“The amphipods in its escort never sleep. Every sixth day one of them drifts up alone and doesn't come back — and the circle gains a new ring.”
its escort

“Born of the Hadal Scavenger's hunger-swarm and the Trench Shrimp's invisible red armor: the trench's cleanup crew, grown a keeper.”
A Snowfall spark of The Kindled
an open question
It started as a quarrel. The Hadal Scavenger's swarm wanted to strip everything clean; the Trench Shrimp believed in keeping some things whole. Their first clutch hatched wrong — crimson instead of pale, armored instead of soft — and the swarm chose to follow it anyway. Scavendrift taught them the compromise: you can keep a thing and still make it yours.
The circles keep growing. Last week a fisher's lost net-tag showed up in the ring; this week the tags read from boats that never reported fishing here. Scavendrift places each one dead-center and waits, antennae lifted, like it's expecting someone to come claim them.
The circles are a map now. Old vent-dwellers swear the rings point toward the trench wall where the current slows — toward whatever the trench keeps for itself. Scavendrift seems to know. It just hasn't decided whether we're ready.

“Count the rings in the lost-and-found. There are always more rings than objects. One ring is empty, and it's the one Scavendrift watches longest.”
