The living story
The story so far
Born from Atum's word and spit, twin to Tefnut, he did the one great deed of his life at the beginning of time: he lifted his daughter Nut away from his father Geb and has held the sky up with his own two hands ever since.
Happening now
Still holding. The baboons bark the dawn, the stars wheel overhead, and Shu's arms do not move. Gods do not get to put things down.
What may come
If he ever set her down, the sky would fall onto the earth and the world would end in an embrace. He will never set her down. That is what he tells himself. That is what makes him a god.
Whispers about Shu
“Khepri rolled the sun a finger's width off its course at dawn — the priests measured the shadow and went white — and Shu bent the whole sky to match it, arms trembling, rather than let the light go crooked. The dawn was crooked. The sky bent to straighten it. Neither of them has explained himself.”
The dawn was crooked. The sky bent to straighten it.
