The Forty-Two

“Forget one name and the Hall gets very quiet.”

The living story

The story so far

The judges of Maat, one for each nome of Egypt, twenty-one to a side in the Hall of Two Truths. The deceased must name each one — Usekh-nemmit of Heliopolis, Fenti of Hermopolis, Set-qesu breaker of bones — and declare to each a sin not committed. Forget one name, and the Hall gets very quiet.

Happening now

They are seated, twenty-one a side, waiting for tonight's dead to name them. The chief lector is reading the list aloud twice, once forward and once backward, the way the House of Life requires.

What may come

They will sit for every weighing until the weighings end. The rows are full. The rows have always been full.

Whispers about The Forty-Two

“The lector swears it now, and two of the torch-bearers back him: between the twenty-first declaration and the twenty-second, the chief lector paused — held a whole breath — and then went on. He reads the list twice, forward and backward. Both times, the pause landed in the same place.”

The list is read twice. The pause is in the same place twice.

“Seshat's own copy has a smudge between the twenty-first name and the twenty-second — and the junior scribe cleaned it three times, and three times it came back by morning, same shape, same place. She has stopped having it cleaned. She just turns the page a little faster now.”

The record-keeper cannot keep this page clean.

“A wng-plant is growing by the Hall's outer wall, where no seed was planted and no gardener tends it. The priests won't weed it. You don't weed the plant that the Pyramid Texts say will judge the gods — not when it's growing outside the courtroom.”

The plant that will judge the gods is growing outside the courtroom.

Why someone keeps The Forty-Two

  • because there are forty-two of them and they miss nothing — you keep them for accountability
  • because you have to name each one, and naming things is power
  • because the Hall gets very quiet if you forget, and you don't forget

The Duat

The night journey and the weighing: Ra’s barque through twelve gates, the forty-two judges, the scales, and the things that wait beside them.
