The story so far
The La Brea tar pits preserved Teratornis merriami by the thousands — the 'thunderbird,' twelve feet of scavenger, stuck in the same asphalt that trapped the mammoths. Brea has read every implication: he knows how things end. In the Undertow he is the Empty Sky's archivist of endings — he keeps the records of last flights, last hunts, last thermals, and he does it cheerfully, because someone has to find the endings interesting or the grief wins. The Last Ones visit him when they need to laugh about the worst thing.
