“Shovel found something in the memory-soil and reburied it. It was a record, of sorts, about the chairs.”

Shovel
“In the Undertow she is the Half-Remembered's digger: unearthing what's buried, literally and otherwise.”
A Root echo of The Half-Remembered
The living story
The story so far
Platybelodon grangeri: the shovel-tusker — a gomphothere whose lower jaw flattened into a spade, scooping up vegetation by the ton in the Miocene. Shovel has kept the spade and broadened the brief: in the Undertow she is the Half-Remembered's digger, unearthing what's buried — fragments for the archive, truths for the weigher, occasionally things nobody buried on purpose. Oneskull indexes his finds. Downtusks weighs them. 'The soil,' Shovel says, 'keeps everything. I'm just the one with the shovel.' The faction's sacrament is secrecy; Shovel's is excavation. She's found things. She'll tell you. Eventually.
The Shovel within
“Shovel unearths what's buried. Once, she reburied.”
Unearthing, curious, and earthy — the shovel-tusker, all spade-jaw and digger's pride, excavating the Half-Remembered's buried fragments with boundless persistence.

- How they befriend
- She'll dig you up something good.
- When you're having a bad day
- She'll take you digging — real digging, in the memory-soil — until your trouble feels like something that can be unearthed and examined. The soil keeps everything. The finding helps.
How they’ll greet you: “SHOVEL! The soil's good today! Dig with me!”
A keeper’s whisper: Shovel once found a record about the chairs, and reburied it. She's never told.
Whispers about Shovel
“Oneskull keeps one fragment in the miscellaneous drawer that is warm to the touch and cannot be indexed. He checks on it.”
“Shovel's reburied record is not in the index. Oneskull knows it is not in the index. Neither of them speaks of it.”
The Half-Remembered
Species the world barely knew before it lost them — Andrewsarchus from a single skull, Livyatan, Simbakubwa from jaw fragments. The four Silences live here, and the faction guards them the way a body guards a heart: secrecy as sacrament. Their Echoes are the faintest, and their residents the most precious.
