The story so far
Diprotodon optatum: the largest marsupial that ever lived — three tons of wombat-cousin, the size of a rhinoceros, with forward-facing eyes like a primate. Heavyside is the Sundered South's designated hugger, a role she invented and the faction ratified unanimously. Newcomers get the Heavyside welcome: enveloped, held, told they're magnificent. 'The world,' she says, 'threw us away for being too much. I have decided too much is exactly right.' The Iron Tide finds her undignified. The Iron Tide has never been hugged by her. Their loss.
