The story so far
Varanus priscus: twenty-three feet of monitor lizard — the largest land lizard ever — perhaps venomous like its Komodo cousins, stalking Pleistocene Australia. Priscus has seen the South's whole carnival: the campaigns, the elections, the showing off. He attends the way an old soldier attends a parade — fond, distant, done. The young ones dare each other to ask about the venom. He tells them, truthfully, that the most dangerous thing about him now is his patience. They're disappointed. He's not.
