The story so far
Andrewsarchus mongoliensis — the largest land carnivorous mammal ever to live, and known from exactly one three-foot skull found in Mongolia, a single fragment that implies a giant 45 million years ago. Oneskull is the Undertow's proof that almost nothing can be almost everything. In the Empty Sky he is the archivist: the index is his, every fragment filed, every story kept, every name in its slot — except his own, which has no slot, because he is the filing and not the filed. Greatlion, the fragment-born lion, understands him best: two known-from-almost-nothing. Shovel, the digger, brings him the finds; he indexes them. 'Give me a fragment,' Oneskull says, 'and I will give you the animal. Give me a skull, and I will give you the world.'
