The story so far
Hieraaetus moorei: thirty-three pounds — the largest eagle that ever lived — with talons the size of a tiger's claws, hunting moa five hundred pounds heavy. Māori legend kept it as the poukai, the monstrous bird of the old stories: one of the few extinct animals that survived into human myth. Poukai remembers being legend, and it has not made her humble. In the Undertow she is the Empty Sky's huntress-in-retirement — no hunting, house rule three — and its truth-teller: she is the only one who tells Skyquake when he's being dramatic, and he listens, because she once hunted things his size.
