The story so far
Dinornis novaezealandiae: twelve feet tall — the tallest bird that ever lived — a flightless gentle giant of New Zealand, gone within a century of human arrival. Twelvefoot remembers the forests, the ferns, the suddenness. In the Undertow she is the Last Ones' gentle tower: the young ones climb her legs like trees, the old ones rest in her lee, and she has a complicated, careful friendship with Poukai — the eagle whose kind hunted hers. They've talked about it. They're working on it. 'The past,' Twelvefoot says, lowering the great neck, 'is a high branch. We don't have to live in it.'
