Kepler-186f was the discovery that changed everything: the first Earth-sized world in a habitable zone, announced in 2014. She arrived in the Court as a quiet celebrity and chose gardening over glory. The inner elders patronize her; the newcomers revere her.

Her stone-leaf sprouts have begun leaning — all of them, in the same direction, toward no star anyone can name. Russet re-plants them straight every morning. Every morning they lean again.
