The living story
The story so far
On her island home, her family shared one burrow for generations — mothers, sisters, cousins, all molting in rhythm. Socotra brought that togetherness to the Court, and the solitary tarantulas didn't know what had hit them. It was hugs.
Happening now
She is hosting the weekly group dinner in her burrow, and eleven relatives are currently arguing about cricket seasoning. Socotra is in the middle of it, glowing.
What may come
The next synchronized molt is approaching, and the whole family will shed at once in a shimmering pile. Visitors are welcome. Bring your own corner.
“She was asked about the thread in the fossil bed exactly once. She smiled, blessed a clutch of Gooty's spiderlings instead, and spoke of family — which is, the Unspun point out, the one thing the fossil thread was never attached to. Socotra tells the family part at every dinner, and nobody asks about the rest.”
because she broke the ancient law of solitude with dinner parties
because she shares her burrow, her meals, and her molts with eleven relatives
because keeping Socotra feels like being invited into the warmest family in spiderhood
The Tarantula Court
Slow, deliberate, magnificent. The court’s etiquette is elaborate and mostly about not startling anyone. Redknees, sapphires, and one Goliath whose footsteps have a bass line.
