He discovered his bellow as a young bull, practicing in the back swamp where nobody could hear — except everybody could hear, for miles. His debut cleared three territories and won him the best basking bank on the river. He has never been humble about it since.
Happening now
He headlines the spring chorus — the dawn bellow-off that sets the season’s hierarchy. He has won eleven years running. His technique: "Bellow from the belly, not the throat. Mean it." Young bulls take notes. The notes don’t help. The belly can’t be taught.
What may come
He is recording the Great Bellow — his definitive performance, at the perfect dawn, on the perfect bank, eleven years in the making. Rehearsals are daily. The river vibrates. The females are already impressed. He insists on perfection anyway.
“Basso bellowed at the winter moon and the pond ice cracked in a perfect spiral, ring within ring. Bayou measured it twice. "That's not a crack," she said at last. "That's a pattern." Basso has not bellowed since. He is waiting to see if it happens again.”
because eleven years undefeated, bellow from the belly
because the Great Bellow is coming and the river is already vibrating

Personality
The river’s bass line, and he knows it. Basso’s mating bellow is so deep it makes the water dance — literally, droplets leaping off his back in the famous "water dance." He performs it every spring. The females are impressed. The males are intimidated.
