He was born white in a black-water swamp — impossible to hide, impossible to ignore — and instead of hiding, he became the swamp’s ghost story. "The white gator" keeps the poachers away, the tourists respectful, and the swamp’s mystique intact. He’s not hiding. He’s marketing.
He moves through the black water without a ripple — twelve feet of moonlight, silent as thought. The herons don’t see him. The fish don’t feel him. Bayou swears he once surfaced beside him, looked him in the eye, and nodded. Bayou doesn’t swear often. He swears about this.
He is, the old ones say, the swamp’s conscience — appearing to those who take too much, vanishing before they can apologize. Three poachers have quit after seeing him. They won’t say what he did. He did nothing. That was the point.

Four older than the registry itself — the tuatara, the matriarch, the ghost, the abyssal. Never seen shedding. A seasonal rite: only three of each may ever exist.
