The living story
The story so far
He was already ancient when Aeon was a hatchling — a tortoise so old the young ones thought "Old Hundred" was a title, not a count. Then, in his 340th year, he did what no tortoise does: he shed his entire shell-pattern at once, and underneath was moonstone.
Happening now
The Second Shed changed him the way lightning changes sand — same stuff, new glass. He sees slower and further now. He speaks rarely. When he does, the forest records it. His sayings are short. "The shell is a suggestion," he said once. The philosophers are still working on it.
What may come
He is waiting, he says, for the hundred-and-first. "Every shed is a question," he told Pip. "The last one is: what was I for?" Pip thinks about this daily. So does everyone else. The question is doing its work.
