She was born on a beach she has never seen since — leatherbacks don’t do nostalgia, they do navigation. She imprinted the Earth’s magnetic field as a hatchling and has been reading it like a map for eighty years.
Happening now
She crosses entire oceans alone, surfacing only to breathe and to check, briefly, whether the world has gotten its act together. It hasn’t. She dives again. The jellyfish are reliable. The jellyfish never disappoint.
What may come
She is teaching her daughter the crossing now — which currents, which depths, which glows mean food and which mean "swim around." The lessons take years. The ocean has nothing but time. Neither does Trench.
“The Abyssal has been chasing a glow two miles down for a century. Trench says it is not a jellyfish — jellyfish don't swim in spirals that match Old Hundred's dream exactly. She is swimming toward the first skin. She will never reach it. She is going anyway.”
because she commutes a mile straight down and calls it Tuesday
because eighty years of reading the planet’s magnetic field like a map
because "the jellyfish never disappoint" is a whole worldview
The Ancient Shells
The shelled ones: sea turtles, tortoises, terrapins, snappers — the slowest hearts and the longest memories. Fifteen shells, none of them in any hurry at all.

Personality
The deepest diver in the reptile world. Trench swims a mile down into black water, where the pressure would crush a car, to hunt jellyfish by their glow — and then surfaces, exhales once, and goes back down like it’s a commute. Because it is.
