She was born on a beach that no longer exists — washed away, the old ones say, "by something." She has been diving ever since, deeper each decade, chasing a light she saw once as a hatchling: a glow, two miles down, that wasn’t a jellyfish. She’s still chasing it.
She surfaces once a year, at the same rock, for exactly one hour. Trench meets her there. They don’t speak much — what do you say to someone who’s seen two miles down? Last year the Abyssal said: "It’s still there." Trench has thought about nothing else since.
Her scars — long, parallel, unexplained — are the ocean’s greatest mystery. "The deep," she says, when asked, "has opinions." She won’t elaborate. The deep, presumably, agrees. The glow is still down there. She’s going back.
“The Abyssal has been chasing a glow two miles down for a century. Trench says it is not a jellyfish — jellyfish don't swim in spirals that match Old Hundred's dream exactly. She is swimming toward the first skin. She will never reach it. She is going anyway.”
She is swimming toward something.
Four older than the registry itself — the tuatara, the matriarch, the ghost, the abyssal. Never seen shedding. A seasonal rite: only three of each may ever exist.
