Patience has never hurried a healing — not once, in all her long running — and the Soft Bay runs on her unhurriedness the way the Foundry runs on coal. Her hourglass torso holds sand that never quite runs out; young Menders time their training by it. Asked whether the First Built is lonely on the Long Dim, she said, 'No, dear. Lonely is the wrong shape for it,' and would not say what the right shape is.
