The stripes are camouflage and warning both — a tiger's livery on a catfish, patrolling the whitewater channels by night, whiskers reading the current like a sage reading scripture. Tigerstripe is the Whitewater Drift's night watch: while the day factions sleep, he walks the channels, counting the boats, checking the nets, making sure the river's bargains hold till dawn. The river towns know his stripes the way they know the moon. He has never once been thanked properly. He prefers it that way — gratitude, he says, is a daylight currency.
