Herald's face has watched over knights from a thousand crests — white, solemn, incorruptible. The dog himself was less ceremonial: he tracked boar through Norman forests and bayed so beautifully the hunters stopped to listen. England folded him into the bloodhound and the beagle and forgot to say thank you.
He spends his mornings posing, because old habits from eight hundred years of heraldry are hard to break. Echo has started baying in his exact pitch, which Herald pretends not to notice. He has begun sitting a little straighter when she does.
One day someone will paint a new crest — not a noble house, but a dog park in Ohio. Herald will be on it, mid-bay. It will be the first crest he's ever actually wanted to be on.
