Kesi greeted a traveler last season who had been gone eleven years — named him, asked after his limp, remembered his favorite fig tree. He wept. She offered him fruit like no time had passed.
She is currently watching the high branches for someone she will not name. 'A face I haven't tasted yet,' is all she'll say.
The keepers asked if she remembers the Oldest's face. She went quiet — the only time anyone has seen Kesi at a loss — and changed the subject to figs.
“Travelers speak of a figure glimpsed at the forest's edge at dusk — wooden, faceless, a bishop's smooth calm, a small dark dog-thing at his heel that changes shape when unobserved. He does not belong to any troop's stories. Kesi — who remembers every face — says she has never tasted his, and smiles when she says it, the way she smiles at the almost-names. The keepers have no record of him. The forest, it seems, is keeping him to itself.”
The wooden stranger walks softly here.
“Kavi's oldest story — the one even he calls impossible — says the Oldest's first swing never ended: that every swing since is the same swing, continuing. Hush's lullaby, the keepers note, has the same shape as a swing — out, and back, and out. Kesi — asked once, directly, if she remembers the Oldest's face — went quiet, and changed the subject to figs, and has never been quiet about anything else. The forest keeps swinging. The branch moves with no wind. At dawn, you feel watched kindly. Draw no conclusions. The forest has drawn none. The swing continues.”
