“Echo has started baying in Herald's exact pitch at dawn, and Herald has started sitting straighter when she does. The pack sets alarms for the duet. Nobody taught Echo the pitch.”

“The baying is operatic.”

Echo's bay is operatic — a long rolling note that starts in his chest and ends somewhere over the next hill. He once tracked a rabbit for six miles, nose to the ground the whole way, and acted genuinely surprised to find it at the end, as if the tracking were the hobby and the rabbit were a bonus.
He has begun answering the distant train whistle at night, trading verses with it across the valley. The neighbors stopped complaining and started listening. It is, objectively, a duet now.
Rabbit season is coming, and Echo has been practicing his bay in the shower — the acoustics, he feels, are superior. The family has stopped asking questions.
