She lived forty-three years in a single burrow — the longest life ever recorded for a spider — and outlasted every scientist who ever studied her. Sixteen did not hurry. Sixteen did not worry. Sixteen won.
She rests in the burrow she dug before most of her observers were born, in the cool dark she has always preferred. The forest above goes on being loud. She goes on being Sixteen.
Her burrow will stand long after her, a monument in silk and soil. Young spiders will dig nearby and feel, in their spinnerets, that this ground is hallowed. It is.

Burrows with silk hinges, trip-lines in every direction, and the longest memories in the forest. Number 16 lived forty-three years behind one door. Her burrow is now a shrine.
