“Skoll's howl came down from the ridge again last night — three notes, then silence, then three notes again. Rags was already awake. He always is.”
Count the notes.

“There will never be a fourth.”

Ten thousand years gone, and still the largest wolf that ever lived. Skoll ran with the mammoths and outlasted the ice, and his howl is the sound the ice age made when it was proud of itself. The other wild ones of this universe speak his name the way storms speak of the sky — as weather, as fact.
He has been seen at the edge of the treeline at dusk, watching the house dogs with an interest that is not hunger. Last week the wolves of the ridge went silent all at once, mid-howl — and in the quiet, something tall and wooden stood among the pines where nothing had stood before. Skoll looked at it for a long time. Then he turned, and the pack followed, and the figure was gone.
The old stories say Skoll will run again when the world needs reminding of what wild means. Some nights the house dogs all dream of running at once — and wake with their paws still moving.

“The wooden figure was spotted again — this time at the ridge, watching Skoll's silhouette against the moon. It didn't move. It didn't need to. When Rags looked back, it was gone, but the snow held no footprints. Wood doesn't leave footprints. Everyone knows that. Nobody says it.”
The keeper watches the wild ones too.
“Nanook has one look for tourists and, lately, one for the ridge at dusk. It is not the same look. Rags has started running the far ridge where Skoll howls. 'Scouting,' he says.”
The wild is stirring.
Wolves, foxes, coyotes, jackals — Luna’s children who kept the old ways. They watch the porch lights from the treeline with complicated feelings. And above them all, the dire wolf — ten thousand years gone, still the largest wolf that ever lived.
