The story so far
The film exists: a thylacine pacing a concrete enclosure in the Hobart Zoo, 1936 — the last one, called Benjamin, dead within the year. The most documented extinction in history, and the most mourned. In the Undertow, Benjamin is the Last Ones' first mourner and its most famous ghost: everyone knows his story, everyone has seen the film. He spent his first decades here pacing — the enclosure habit, worn deep. Lace's cheering, Brea's cataloging, Sieve's stillness: slowly, he's learning to stand still. 'The film,' he says, 'is not the whole of me. I'm working on the rest.'
