The story so far
Hyaenodon gigas — the Eocene-to-Oligocene hyaenodont, self-sharpening shearing teeth for cracking bone, a predator that held its post on the steppes for millions of years 25 million years ago. Bonecrusher has retired the crushing but kept the post. In the Undertow she is the Long Winter's door-guard: she stands the door the way the steppes stand the sky — enormously, immovably, and with complete gentleness toward everyone who belongs inside. Downtusks, the judger, respects her: two judgers, the tusks and the crush. Knuckles, the other door, nods to her across factions: two enforcers, the door and the crush. 'The teeth,' Bonecrusher says, 'are for show now. The post is the whole animal.' She has never left it. She has never been provoked into leaving it.
