The story so far
Mastodonsaurus giganteus — the Triassic's giant amphibian, a four-foot flat skull on a car-sized body, an ambush predator that lurked in the shallows and simply waited 240 million years ago. Flathead has perfected the wait. In the Undertow he is the Empty Sky's lurker: he takes the long view the way the shallows take the river — by being there before it arrives. Queen, the faction's monarch, respects his patience; Hawker, the aerialist, has argued with him for millennia about sky versus shallows. 'The strike,' Flathead says, 'is overrated. The wait is the whole animal.' He has never struck first. He has never needed to.
