Macrauchenia patachonica: the 'llama with a trunk,' a litoptern — not a camel, not an elephant, but something entirely South American — whose fossils Darwin himself collected in Patagonia. Trunknose has the nose for it: in the Undertow she is the Sundered South's postmaster, sniffing out news from three halls away and delivering it personally, trunk high. Lace is faster with gossip; Trunknose is more reliable with news. The distinction matters to her enormously. The satchel is real leather (memory-leather). The route is sacred. The trunk misses nothing.
