The story so far
Phorusrhacos longissimus: eight feet tall, with a beak like a hatchet — the original terror bird, hunting the Miocene like a feathered axe-murderer. Hatchet has retired the axe and kept the precision: in the Undertow he teaches the young birds the ceremonial forms — the strike slowed to a dance, the kill become a kata. 'The beak,' he tells them, 'is for showing what you could do, so you never have to.' The young ones worship him. The old ones remember what the forms are slowed-down versions of, and watch him teach with something like awe.
