The story so far
Basilosaurus cetoides — 60 feet of Eocene whale, the 'king lizard' that was never a lizard: a walking whale with tiny hind legs, serpentine and enormous, misnamed by the science of 1834 when the fossils first surfaced 40 million years after it swam. Kinglizard has made peace with the misnaming by mastering naming itself. In the Undertow he is the Iron Tide's namer: every young resident gets named twice in the old tradition — once wrong, once true — because he knows that a wrong name, carried long enough, becomes a kind of truth, and a true name is a gift. Boomerang, the returner, brings him the old stories to re-name; Oneskull, the archivist, files them. 'I was named for a lizard I never was,' the Kinglizard says. 'So I name carefully. Names are the only fossils that keep swimming.'
