The story so far
Aepyornis maximus: sixteen hundred pounds, ten feet tall — the elephant bird of Madagascar, the real animal behind Marco Polo's roc, the bird that supposedly carried off elephants. Roc knows the stories — all of them, the true and the tall — and she keeps them the way Unicorn keeps his: fondly, without correction. In the Undertow she is the Last Ones' living legend: the young ones ask about the elephants (she smiles), the old ones nod to the myth (she bows), and she has a standing tea with Unicorn where two truths-behind-two-myths compare notes. 'The legend,' she says, 'was the humans' way of saying we mattered.'
