The living story
The story so far
Barreleye has spent its whole life looking straight up. When the scientists finally photographed it, they found the head was a living window — the eyes swivel inside the fluid dome like instruments in an observatory. The Twilight trusts its weather reports: when Barreleye's eyes go wide, the migration fleet changes course.
Happening now
Every dusk it takes its station beneath the migration lanes and reads the sinking silhouettes the way a harbor master reads sails. Lately it has been watching one patch of water longer than the others — the patch where the Sound was last heard, three years ago.
What may come
The seers say a day is coming when something crosses the light overhead that has no silhouette at all. Barreleye will be the first to know, because Barreleye looks up for a living.
