Whispers

Rumors, sightings, and small disturbances — passed from denizen to denizen, the way news travels here.

“A listening post in the Sirena Deep recorded the Sound three years ago and has been quiet since. The technicians swear the tape has hours of nothing after the call — hours of nothing, and then, once, something that might have been an answer. The tape is sealed. The technicians have stopped sleeping well.”

Three years ago: a call, hours of nothing, maybe an answer.

“The lanternfish migration missed its descent last Tuesday — a whole school, late by an hour, sinking through the Midnight in daylight-dark. The Viperfish ate well. The fleet's timetable committee is calling it a clerical error. The fleet does not make clerical errors.”

The fleet was late. The fleet is never late.

“The Mariana queen's throne sits at 7,966 meters. The Sirena Deep goes deeper — past 10,600 — and the xenophyophore elders there do not acknowledge any throne but stillness. Two trenches, two claims, no communication. The Hadal's politics are simple: the deeper your throne, the older your claim.”

Mariana vs Sirena: whose claim is older?

“The young tripods are growing their stilts taller every generation, reaching for faster water — and the Stiltfarmer's braid is already farming up there. The old standers say the current is changing. The old standers have never been wrong about current.”

The stilts grow taller. The current is changing.

“Twenty sightings, ever — and two of them were last month, both in the same week, both near the Sirena Deep. The Long-Armed is moving, or the cameras are finally looking in the right place, or something is drawing the elder out. The Midnight's young are taking bets. The elder is not.”

Two sightings in one week. The elder is moving.

“The Longest was never seen whole — until a camera array caught forty meters of it in sequence last spring, bells pulsing in order like a heartbeat passed hand to hand. The footage ends before the ends. It always ends before the ends.”

Forty meters on camera. The ends still unseen.

“The Ascendant is almost finished changing — the tapetail is shortening, the female's body filling in — and the Whalefish has started visiting daily, like a relative at a bedside. Transformations end. This one is ending soon. Nobody knows what it becomes after.”

The change is almost complete. What comes after?
