The living story
The story so far
Each one is a single cell — a tiny shelled amoeba — and together they build structures a kilometer wide. The Foraminifera Mat is the trench floor's architecture: countless individuals, one living carpet, built grain by grain from the sediment's memory.
Happening now
It spreads across the floor in its slow vastness, shell by shell. The Sea Pig vacuums around it; the Bristleworm burrows through it; the Mat builds on, one cell thick and a kilometer wide.
What may come
A kilometer is not the limit — it's just where the mapping stopped. The Mat is still spreading, cell by cell, into the unmapped 80%. The trench floor of the future is being built right now, one shell at a time.
