The living story
The story so far
Fifty meters. Longer than a blue whale, longer than any animal that has ever lived — and nobody has ever seen it whole. The great Praya dubia colony at full span is always longer than the light reaches: bells and tentacles and stinging threads fading into the dark at both ends, a creature too long for observation.
Happening now
It drifts the deep in its unseeable entirety, pulsing bell by bell. The Twilight's Siphonophore dreams of this span; the cameras catch fragments — a bell here, a tentacle there — and the Longest continues, whole and unseen.
What may come
One day the lights will be long enough, or the colony will drift shallow enough, and something will see it entire. The Longest is in no hurry. Fifty meters of patience can wait.
