The living story
The story so far
Every night, the largest migration on Earth happens in the dark: trillions of lanternfish rise hundreds of meters to feed in the rich surface waters, then sink back before dawn. The Twilight's whole economy — who eats, who waits, who lights the lanes — is scheduled around their commute.
Happening now
The fleet is rising as you read this. They climb through the dark with their ventral photophores tuned to the last light, invisible from below, a river of silver flowing uphill. By dawn they will be gone, and the Twilight will sweep up the stragglers.
What may come
The timetable is law: those who rise and return are citizens; those who don't return feed the Midnight. One night the fleet will rise and find the surface changed. The Lanternfish are already rehearsing new routes.
