The living story
The story so far
Its teeth are so long they don't fit in its mouth — they curve back toward its eyes when the jaw closes. The Viperfish solved this by never closing its jaw all the way. It hangs in the migration lanes with its lure swaying, and the lanternfish come to the light the way moths come to flame.
Happening now
It holds its station along the nightly route, lure lit, jaw open, patient as a trap. The Treaty of the Lure protects its light as sovereign ground; the Viperfish has never needed the treaty's protection, because nobody argues with the teeth.
What may come
Teeth that long are a young fish's weapon. The old viperfish are growing stranger — slower, deeper, their lures dimmer and their patience longer. The Twilight's hunters are watching to see what the elders are waiting for.
