The living story
The story so far
The sisterhood's finest hour: the Osedax female at full bloom, her red plumes waving above the whale bone, her living roots spread through the marrow like a tree's. Within her, the microscopic males drift — never grown, never leaving, part of the bloom. This is the Fallen Feast at its most sacred.
Happening now
She blooms over the current whalefall, plumes at their fullest, roots at their deepest. The sisterhood tends her the way gardeners tend a prize rose; the Isopod waits its turn with unusual patience.
What may come
Blooms fade — the bone gives out, the roots withdraw, the plumes fall. But the sisterhood remembers every bloom, and the next whale is already swimming somewhere above, unaware it's carrying a garden.
