“The Abyss says the Sound is the vents, dreaming in chemistry — hot rock thinking slow thoughts in iron and sulfur. The Compact has tabled the motion. The vents have not.”

At the hydrothermal vents, where the water is poison and boiling, the Yeti Crab invented agriculture. It grows chemosynthetic bacteria on its own hairy claws, waving them in the vent flow like crops in wind, then harvests the crop with its mouthparts. The Vent Compact's farming charter is written in its name.
It tends its claw-fields at the chimney's edge, waving, waving, harvesting. The vent compact's chimney rights are measured in clawspans, and the Yeti Crab holds some of the finest.
Farming changed everything once before. The Yeti Crab's young are experimenting — new bacteria strains, new waving rhythms. The Abyss's first agricultural revolution may be due for a second.

The Abyss's theory: the vents dream.
“The Vent Compact is arguing about chimney rights again — the farmers say the grazers are working too close to the hot rock, the armorers say everyone is working too close to everything. The Yeti Crab has called a summit. The Pompeii Worm didn't come. The Pompeii Worm never comes.”
Chimney rights: farmers vs grazers vs armorers.
A desert with oases of fire. At the hydrothermal vents, farmers, armorers, and grazers divide chimney rights — and the Osedax sisterhood tends every fallen whale as sacred ground.
