The living story
The story so far
It was three families until science caught up — tapetail larva, bignose male, whalefish female, all one animal. The Ascendant is the moment of change itself: the larva's long tapering tail still trailing, the female's whale-like body already forming. The most extreme metamorphosis in vertebrates, caught in the act.
Happening now
It hangs in the Midnight between what it was and what it will be, neither larva nor female, both. The Whalefish visits it like a diary entry come alive; the young gather to watch change happen in real time.
What may come
Every transformation ends. The Ascendant will finish becoming — the tail will shorten, the body will fill — and the moment will be over. But there are always more larvae, and the change never really stops.
