“Luna's near side shifted by a hair. The same face, almost. Earth pretends not to have measured it. Earth measured it.”
The Moon turned — a fraction

“Tidally locked for eons, Luna shows Earth one face and one face only — a devotion so total the far side has never once been seen by her.”

She has faced Earth for billions of years without once looking away, and she calls this loyalty, not habit. The far side is hers alone; no one on Earth has ever seen it and she likes it that way. Other moons mock her devotion; she has outlasted every mocker.
Lately she has felt the urge to turn — just a fraction, just once — toward the outer dark. She has not done it. She repeats her vow nightly, and nightly it feels slightly heavier, like a held breath.
If the Primordial Suns are converging, Luna will be the first to see it from her fixed post, facing outward forever. She wonders whether loyalty means watching, or warning. The answer, she suspects, will arrive with the dark.
“Luna's near side shifted by a hair. The same face, almost. Earth pretends not to have measured it. Earth measured it.”
The Moon turned — a fraction
Moons, loyal and tidal-locked, dancers and servants. A moon’s love is gravitational: it cannot leave, so it learns to love the staying.
