He grew his ghara late — a source of great adolescent anxiety — and when it finally arrived, his first hum scattered the fish for a mile. He practiced in the back channels for a year. His hum is now so precise he can stun a fish without touching it. Allegedly. He won’t demonstrate. "Trade secret."
Happening now
He leads the dawn fishing choir — twelve gharials, synchronized jaw-snaps, Skimmer’s hum underneath. It’s the river’s most disciplined performance. The fish have learned the schedule. The fish come anyway. The music is that good.
What may come
He is composing the Hum Symphony — a full dawn-chorus piece for ghara and jaw-snap. It premieres at the spring flood. Rehearsals are secret. The river is humming with anticipation. So is Skimmer. Literally.
“Tethys died before the sky learned how to rain — but she describes it perfectly: the smell, the drumming, the way it beads on scales. Skimmer asked how. "The skin remembers," Tethys said. "All of it. Every drop. It was there before the clouds were."”
because his snout hums and that’s the river’s bass line
because the Hum Symphony premieres at the spring flood
because "trade secret" delivered with a straight snout
The River Tyrants
The river tyrants: crocodiles, alligators, caimans, gharials — the ambush perfected over eighty million years. Fifteen smiles, every one of them full of teeth.

Personality
All snout, all grace. Skimmer’s needle-thin jaws are the most specialized tools in the Tyrants — built for one thing, fish, done perfectly. The males grow a bulbous "ghara" on their snout tip that hums. Skimmer’s hum is the river’s bass line.
