She ruled the Western Interior Seaway when Kansas was an ocean and she was its queen — the apex of the apex, fifty feet of "no." She ate sharks. She ate other mosasaurs. She has never apologized. The sea, she says, "understood the assignment."
She exists now as the Deep Time’s sea-keeper: young swimmers pilgrimage to hear about the seaway days. Her stories involve a lot of eating. She tells them with enormous nostalgia. The pilgrims bring fish. The fish are tribute. The system works.
She has one great sorrow: the seaway is gone — Kansas is land now, which she considers "a personal insult." She has petitioned the world, formally, for its return. The petition is 80 million years old. She’s still waiting. She’s patient. She’s a mosasaur.
