Before there were spiders, there was a creature with sheets of silk-spinning plates along its belly, three hundred and ninety million years ago — and it used the silk not to catch prey, but to wrap its eggs, the way you'd tuck in something precious. Attercopus invented the thread. Everyone since has been improvising.
She sits closest to the fire at the Unspun's gatherings and watches every young spider spin, the way a founder watches her company run without her. Sometimes she reaches out a leg to steady a trembling spinneret. The trembling stops.
She has begun unspooling a single thread that she says will take the rest of time to finish. When asked what it is for, she says only: 'The eggs are never all tucked in.' No one has dared ask twice.
“On windless nights her river-spanning line vibrates at a frequency no insect makes. The Unspun say it is answering something. Darwin says it is just the river. She has started keeping notes on the river's replies.”
Darwin's bridge line hums at midnight.
“Once a year, when the light is right, the fossil spiders press close to the thread with no spider and are silent — which, for spiders, is saying everything. Attercopus was seen touching it with one leg. She would not say what she felt. Her leg trembled for a week.”
The Unspun gather where the fossil thread lies and say nothing.
“They say spiders of her age dream in deep time, and Sixteen has begun describing a spinner older than stone. She could not have met the First Spinner. The Unspun have stopped asking how she knows.”
Sixteen remembers something she never saw.
